Sensory Room

Our Sensory Room is designed as a calm and supportive environment where students can regulate their sensory needs and emotional wellbeing.

Many disabled young adults experience sensory processing differences, which means everyday environments can sometimes feel overwhelming. The sensory room provides a safe space where individuals can relax, decompress, and explore sensory experiences in a controlled and supportive way.

The room includes calming lighting, soft textures, tactile objects, and comfortable seating. These elements are carefully chosen to create a soothing atmosphere that can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

Students may use the room to:

  • Take a quiet break from busy activities

  • Engage in guided sensory exploration

  • Practise relaxation techniques

  • Re-regulate when feeling overwhelmed

Having access to a sensory space can make a huge difference in helping young people manage stress and sensory overload, allowing them to return to activities feeling calmer and more ready to engage.

The sensory room supports:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Self-awareness and coping strategies

  • Mental wellbeing

  • A sense of safety and comfort

For many participants, learning how to recognise and respond to their sensory needs is an important step towards greater independence and self-advocacy.
